Malaysia Airlines Signs Up AFI KLM E&M For Boeing Next-Generation 737 Component Support

Nov 10, 2010

Subang (10 November 2010): Malaysia Airlines Engineering & Maintenance and AFI KLM E&M signed a 10-year component support contract for 35 of the carrier’s fleet of B737-800, with an option for a further 20 aircraft. The 737 Component Services Program is operated in partnership with Boeing.

The contract also provides for AFI KLM E&M to create a component spares pool in Malaysia Airlines’ E&M facility to exclusively support the airline’s B737-800. Simultaneously, a regional component pool will be set up in Kuala Lumpur to provide services to Malaysia Airlines and other customers. These 2 pools will have access to AFI KLM E&M’s main component pool in Amsterdam, offering fast track procurement of essential spares while reducing inventory and repair costs.

Malaysia Airlines E&M’s Executive Vice President, En Mohd Roslan Ismail said, “This is a win-win partnership with AFI KLM E&M as they provide a perfect match for our requirements, both in terms of quality repairs and in building up our own maintenance capabilities. While the home-based pool provides us immediate access to parts for our daily operations, the regional pool will give us the advantage of having over USD15 million worth of parts at our doorstep.

“In addition, AFI KLM E&M, with its vast experience in maintaining the B737-800 will help us build up our own B737-800 component overhaul capabilities. This will enable us to gain new businesses.”

KLM Engineering & Maintenance Executive Vice President, Mr Peter de Swert stressed, “We are especially delighted by Malaysia Airlines’ confidence in us. The creation of a regional spares pool represents a formidable development opportunity in this region. It enables us to put down strong roots in a market where the Next-Generation 737 offers attractive growth prospects.”

The regional pool commences with servicing 35 B737-800 from customer airlines in Asia Pacific. The component pool will grow in tandem with the increase of B737-800 in the region. In the next 10 years, more than 200 B737-800 aircraft will be in service.

AFI KLM E&M is Boeing’s exclusive partner for providing B737-800 support worldwide. They are also the main operator for B737-800 in Europe and maintain an extensive fleet of over 200 of such aircraft on its own behalf and that of its customer airlines.

MAS gets first B737-800

SUBANG: Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS) yesterday received its first B737-800, the latest generation aircraft which promises both economy and business-class passengers a better travel experience.
MAS' new B737-800 was welcomed with a water-cannon salute when it arrived at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang.

Passengers will enjoy an in-flight entertainment system which will include audio and video-on-demand, roomier interior, better ambience, higher ceiling and mood lighting.

The national carrier had placed an order for 55 such aircraft with Boeing and would take delivery of three more by the year-end, said managing director and chief executive officer Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin.

“We are proud to announce that we will be the first full-service airline in the world to operate B737-800 with the new Boeing Skyline Interior,” he said after taking delivery of the new aircraft at Skypark Airport here.

MALAYSIA Airlines (MAS) (3786) yesterday received its first new generation, refurbished B737-800 with a new livery, and expects a steady flow of new Boeing and Airbus aircraft it has ordered to come in from the first half of next year up to 2012.

The national air carrier has ordered up to 55 B737-800, 25 A330-300 and six A380 aircraft under its refleeting programme, its chairman Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid said.

"We will receive three B737-800s this year and first A330-300 from April next year. We expect the first delivery of the A380s in the first quarter of 2012.

"In the first half of next year, we expect a steady flow of aircraft coming in," he told reporters after receiving the B737-800 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, yesterday.
Munir said MAS will get its second B737-800 within the next two weeks.

Commenting on the new aircraft, he said it was historic given that MAS will be the world's first full-service airline to operate the B737-800 with the new "Boeing Sky Interior".

"We have two flights scheduled on November 15 - an inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu, followed by a commercial flight from Kota Kinabalu to Haneda, Tokyo," he said.

The 160-seater aircraft sports a new dynamic livery with red and blue lines, MAS' corporate colours.

"All the fleet of B737-800s will have the same livery," MAS managing director and CEO Tengku Datuk Seri Azmil Zahruddin said.

"We went for a cleaner design that is more flowing and environment-friendly," he added.

Tengku Azmil said the new B737-800 will be deployed in various sectors. "The aircraft can fly to sectors that take about 45 minutes or even five to six hours of journey."

The existing B737-400 will be eventually phased out following the arrivals of the B737-800s. However, the move will not be immediate.

Tengku Azmil declined to disclose the cost of refurbishing the aircraft. "We are not allowed to disclose by Boeing on how much we have paid for the aircraft. All I can say is the lease price of the aircraft is US$70 million (RM217 million) each.

"This is just the lease price ... as for us, of course there's discount," he said.

Munir and Tengku Azmil were on hand to receive the crew members of MAS' first B737-800, which touched down at Skypark Terminal in Subang at 1.15pm yesterday.

The B737-800 with up to six hours of flight time, left Boeing's field in Seattle, the US, on October 29 on a three-day multi-leg journey, stopping in Hawaii, Marshall Islands and Guam before arriving in Subang.
